God is doing some amazing things in Oklahoma City! The life and beatification of Bl. Stanley Rother has inspired a renewal of evangelization and charity in the local Church. The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Catholic Charities, local parishes, apostolates, and many inspiring individuals are laboring every day to make disciples.
Even with all of this momentum and effort, the obstacles and challenges are staggering. Young people in the inner city regularly encounter a cycle of neglect, violence, and broken family life, in addition to being raised in a hostile post-Christian society. These young people need significant intervention. We cannot sit back and wait for them to come to us or hope that their parents or grandparents can do it alone. We must fight for each young person. Vagabond Missions sends missionaries into their schools and neighborhoods to seek and save the lost.
On April 1, 2022, Archbishop Paul Coakley granted permission for Vagabond Missions to begin outreach in Oklahoma City. In the fall of 2022, Vagabond Missions OKC began with a 33-day prayer campaign. Over 150 people prayed and fasted daily for young people in Oklahoma City. It was a tremendous outpouring of the Holy Spirit. On the second day of the prayer campaign, we began
meeting weekly with young people in a room at Holy Angels Catholic Church. From the very beginning, God put young people in front of us who were hungry to know him. It has been a joy to watch them laugh and have fun. It has been moving to pray with them and hear their faith.
The group continued to grow and in the summer of 2023, we took 25 young people to a Steubenville Youth Conference. In the fall of 2023, our first missionary team of young adults moved to Oklahoma City and we began renovations on our first youth center. God has done so much in such a short time and is just getting started.
